Making your Instagram bio work for you

Your Instagram bio might seem like a tiny detail, but it’s actually one of the most powerful tools in your social media arsenal. Think of it as your profile’s shop window - it needs to be clear, compelling, and make people want to stick around. If your bio isn’t doing the heavy lifting for you, it’s time to whip it into shape.

Why your Instagram bio matters

First impressions happen fast. When someone lands on your Instagram profile, you have just a few seconds to convince them to stay. A well-crafted bio should answer three key questions:

  1. Who are you?

  2. What do you do and how do you help people?

  3. What should people do next?

If your bio isn’t covering these bases, it’s time for a little tweak.

Step 1: Nail your name field

The name field isn’t just for your actual name - it’s searchable! That means you should optimise it with keywords that help people find you.

For example, instead of just "Helen Bowman," I use Helen Bowman | Social Media Specialist. This way, if someone searches for social media help, I have a better chance of appearing in the results.

Check your name field. Is it helping you get found? If not, tweak it!

Step 2: Keep your bio clear and punchy

You only have 150 characters - don’t waste them on fluff. Use this simple formula:

  • What you do (help people, offer a service, sell a product)

  • Who you do it for (your ideal audience)

  • Why it matters (the transformation or benefit you provide)

  • Call to action (what should people do next?)

For example, my bio reads:

  • Helping business mums beat the social media overwhelm

  • 18 years in business (to build trust)

  • Tea lover, idea creator, pretend thespian (a little personality!)

  • ✨ Sign up for hints & tips ✨

Now go and check your own bio - does it tell people exactly what you do and why they should care? If not, time for a little revamp!

Step 3: Use your link wisely

Instagram now lets you add up to five clickable links in your bio. That means you don’t necessarily need a third-party tool like Linktree anymore - you can link directly to your website, lead magnets, booking pages, or key resources.

A common mistake? Wasting your link on something vague like “Check out my website!” Instead, tell people why they should click. For example: Grab my free Instagram bio checklist here!

Step 4: Format for readability (and personality!)

Nobody likes reading a big wall of text. Break up your bio using line spaces and emojis where relevant. And make sure it sounds like YOU. If your brand is fun and chatty, let that shine through. If it’s more professional, keep it polished but warm.

A good test? Read your bio out loud. If it sounds stiff or robotic, tweak it until it feels natural.

Step 5: Make the most of highlights

Your Instagram Highlights (those little circles under your bio) should reinforce what your bio is saying. They act as a quick reference guide for new visitors.

A solid setup might include:

About me – A quick intro to who you are and what you do

Services – What you offer and how people can work with you

Freebies – Any free resources, guides, or downloads

Testimonials – Social proof to build credibility

FAQs – Common questions answered in one place

If your highlights are just random saved stories from three years ago, it’s time for a refresh!

Your bio glow-up challenge

Ready to give your bio a makeover? Here’s your mission (should you choose to accept it):

  • Open your Instagram profile and read your bio like a total stranger.

  • Does it clearly say what you do, who you help, and what people should do next?

  • If not, tweak it using the tips from this post.
